BEIJING, China — Chinese President Xi Jinping has described the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari as a significant loss not only to Nigeria but also to the Chinese people, who regarded him as a trusted friend and respected statesman.
In a condolence message sent to President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, Xi extended heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the Chinese government and citizens. The message, reported by Chinese state media outlet Xinhua, praised Buhari’s lifetime dedication to national development and international diplomacy.
“President Buhari was an important leader who committed himself to pursuing a development path aligned with Nigeria’s unique national conditions,” Xi said, commending Buhari’s efforts in promoting national unity and advancing the country’s progress.
Highlighting Buhari’s international reputation, President Xi noted the former Nigerian leader’s significant role in strengthening China-Nigeria relations. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening the strategic partnership between both nations and expressed hope for continued cooperation.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who served from 2015 to 2023, passed away on Sunday at the age of 82. His leadership and contributions, Xi said, will be remembered fondly by the global community, especially by China.
