State government reinforces commitment to safety, food security, and intelligence gathering with expanded local security corps
In a strategic move to enhance security across Ekiti State, particularly at the grassroots level, the state government has recruited an additional 404 operatives into the Ekiti State Security Network Agency, widely known as Amotekun, along with the Agro-Marshal and Anti-Grazing Corps. The development marks a significant reinforcement of the state’s security framework, underscoring Governor Biodun Oyebanji's commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and agricultural investments.
The passing out parade of the newly trained personnel was held at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ise Ekiti on Friday. Speaking at the event, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, retired Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana, described the recruitment as a sustained and deliberate investment in Ekiti’s security architecture. Representing the governor, Ogundana emphasized that the initiative is designed to support existing security agencies, deepen community involvement, and address emerging security threats across the state.
“The governor considered it necessary to rejig the state’s security framework by establishing additional informal security outfits that ensure community participation,” Ogundana said. “The presence of Amotekun, Agro-Marshal, and Anti-Grazing Corps will significantly enhance intelligence gathering, rapid response capabilities, and protection of key agricultural projects to ensure food security.”
According to Ogundana, the newly inducted operatives underwent an intensive three-week training facilitated by officers of the Nigerian Army with support from other security agencies. He assured that the government has equipped the units with logistics, including operational vehicles and communication gadgets, to ensure a swift response to distress calls.
He further charged the recruits to uphold discipline, work collaboratively, and prioritize the safety of residents in their designated areas. “Let your conscience guide your actions; you will be held accountable for your conduct in the line of duty,” he warned.
The Special Adviser also praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for deploying military personnel to support the training exercise. He extended appreciation to local government chairmen and traditional rulers for their contributions to the success of the programme.
Echoing similar sentiments, the Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Ekiti chapter, Ojo Oluwasegun, lauded Governor Oyebanji’s proactive leadership in security, saying his efforts have earned Ekiti the reputation of being Nigeria’s safest state.
Director-General of the Homeland Intelligence Agency in Ekiti, Adetuberu Oludotun, added that the strategic expansion of the local security corps would boost the state’s capacity to tackle current and potential threats, thereby laying a strong foundation for a more robust and effective security ecosystem.
The deployment of the new operatives across various local government areas is expected to significantly strengthen surveillance, intelligence sharing, and overall security presence throughout Ekiti State.
