Three-day prayers for late former President Muhammadu Buhari draw national leaders, Islamic scholars, and dignitaries to Katsina in a show of unity and reverence
Daura, Katsina State – Nigeria’s political and religious elite gathered in Daura on Wednesday to pay final respects to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari during a three-day Fidau prayer held at his residence. The solemn occasion attracted a powerful assembly of national figures, reflecting the weight of Buhari’s legacy and the unity forged in mourning.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, delivered a poignant tribute, recounting a confidential mission he undertook to visit Buhari in a London hospital on Tinubu’s directive. Shettima described death as “an inevitable destiny hanging on everyone’s neck,” urging all to reflect on life’s transient nature.
"Buhari's death is not just a family or regional loss, but a national one," Shettima emphasized, praying for Allah’s forgiveness and eternal peace for the late leader.
Also in attendance were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Senate President Godswill Akpabio led a National Assembly delegation, describing Buhari as “a patriot and a shining light” who embodied discipline, integrity, and humility throughout his public service.
Akpabio revealed that the delegation faced flight delays due to an airport closure but remained determined to honour the former president, whom he credited for significant national contributions, including the naming of a Federal University law faculty in his honour.
“He was not just a leader but a symbol of humility and accountability,” Akpabio noted.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, who led the host state’s delegation, remembered Buhari as a father figure and moral compass. He expressed personal grief over the loss, sharing that he frequently visited the former president even after his retirement.
“He always reminded me to fear God, lead justly, and serve Nigeria selflessly,” Radda said, calling on current leaders to draw lessons from Buhari’s life and legacy.
Among other high-profile attendees were Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum; former Foreign Affairs Minister Babagana Kingibe; several serving ministers including those of Housing, Information, Budget, Health, and Agriculture; as well as key military and intelligence figures such as former Army Chief Tukur Buratai and NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa.
Traditional rulers also graced the event, including the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, and emirs from Potiskum and Gumel, alongside district heads and kingmakers.
Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri paid his respects, praising Buhari’s patriotism and trustworthiness. “He was a leader par excellence who dedicated his life to the service of the nation,” Fintiri said.
Former Minister of Communications, Prof Isa Pantami, led additional prayer sessions, seeking divine mercy for Buhari’s soul. Mamman Daura, the late president’s nephew, was also present to receive condolences from mourners.
The gathering was led spiritually by Sarkin Malamai of Daura, Mallam Naziru Daura, who offered prayers for forgiveness and peace for the deceased.
As Nigeria bids farewell to one of its most consequential leaders, the unity and reverence on display at the Daura prayer event signaled not only respect for a departed statesman but also a moment of national reflection on leadership, service, and mortality.
