Uturu/Isuikwuato criminal hideout dismantled as police intensify raids to protect ABSU students and residents
In a decisive crackdown on rising criminal activity, the Abia State Police Command has apprehended four suspects linked to a notorious armed robbery syndicate that has been terrorising the Uturu/Isuikwuato axis, particularly targeting students of Abia State University (ABSU).
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, the suspects were arrested following a coordinated operation led by the Divisional Police Officer of Uturu, with active support from residents.
The suspects have been identified as Jerry Chisom (32) of Umagu Ugwuelle, Uturu; Tochukwu Ugula (32) of Amadi Achara, Uturu; Chinonso Nwankwo (28) of Nbaka Ugwuelle, Uturu; and Kingsley Onyekeba (19) of Arondizogu, Ideato, Imo State.
The raid, carried out on July 16, 2025, at approximately 3:49 p.m., targeted a criminal hideout along the Uturu/Isuikwuato area, a location flagged for recent incidents of robbery and harassment. The operation led to the recovery of one locally made pistol, a knife, an iPhone 7 Plus, an Infinix phone, and a laptop believed to be stolen from victims.
“The suspects had been part of a group involved in terrorising and dispossessing students and residents of their belongings,” the police stated. “Efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing members of the gang.”
In the course of the broader operation, other criminal camps in the region have also been identified and dismantled as part of a sweeping move to restore security and order.
CP Danladi Isa called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station. He further emphasized the importance of community-police collaboration in the fight against crime.
The latest arrests come as a relief to the Uturu community and signal a renewed commitment by security forces to clamp down on violent crime and protect lives and property in Abia State.
