Surge continues as 10 new groups join the race to become registered political parties, with INEC finalizing its custom-built registration portal.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed a continued surge in interest from political associations ahead of the 2027 general elections, announcing it has now received a total of 144 letters of intent from groups seeking registration as political parties.
In a statement released on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission disclosed that 10 new applications have been submitted in recent days, adding to the 34 received since June 25, when the total stood at 110.
INEC further stated that it is currently evaluating all the submissions to determine which associations meet the legal and procedural requirements to proceed to the next stage of registration. A detailed report is expected at the Commission’s next regular meeting.
To streamline and digitize the process, INEC confirmed it has developed an in-house party registration portal, which has already been demonstrated, approved, and is now ready for deployment. “As with all our IT innovations, the new portal has undergone rigorous internal testing and has received the Commission’s approval,” the statement added.
The Commission has also made public the names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership of the latest applicants via its website and other official platforms for transparency.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to keeping Nigerians fully informed on developments related to political party registration and other electoral activities as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
