President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day period of national mourning to honour the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday. As part of the observance, President Tinubu has ordered that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country from Sunday, marking a solemn tribute to the late leader.
In a statement released on Sunday, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the death of Buhari and announced several national protocols in his honour. “As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu stated.
The president also announced that an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be held on Tuesday, dedicated solely to celebrating the legacy and contributions of the late President Buhari. Additionally, Tinubu confirmed that the federal government will conduct a full state funeral in recognition of Buhari's service and leadership.
Buhari will be laid to rest in his hometown, Daura in Katsina State, on Monday. His death was officially confirmed by his former spokespersons, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmed, in separate statements on social media platform X.
In a further gesture of respect, Tinubu has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to London to oversee arrangements and facilitate the return of Buhari’s remains to Nigeria.
The declaration of national mourning and the holiday period is seen as a significant gesture, reflecting Buhari’s status as a two-term president and former military ruler whose influence spanned decades in Nigeria’s political landscape.
