Six injured in Kubwa–Asham corridor accident; FG promises swift safety measures
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced a full-scale investigation into Tuesday’s derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna-bound train, which left six passengers injured but claimed no lives.
The incident, which occurred around 11:09 a.m. at kilometre 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations, caused panic among commuters and reignited concerns over the safety of Nigeria’s rail transport system.
In a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, the Director General of NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., confirmed that a team of investigators has already been deployed to the accident site. The team, he said, is tasked with gathering evidence, engaging relevant stakeholders, and uncovering the root cause of the derailment.
“The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered,” Badeh assured. He further explained that the probe would focus not only on direct causes but also on underlying factors that may have contributed to the incident. According to him, the ultimate goal of the Bureau is to issue safety recommendations that will help forestall future occurrences.
Badeh also expressed sympathy to the injured passengers and their families, pledging the Bureau’s commitment to transparent, independent reporting. “Our dedication is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a thorough investigation. We will continue to provide updates as our work progresses,” he said.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is currently on an official visit to Brazil, has expressed sadness over the incident. Taking to his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @PBAT, the President said he had been briefed on the derailment and was awaiting further reports.
“Even while in Brazil, I have received reports of today’s Abuja–Kaduna train derailment. I am deeply saddened by this incident. My heartfelt prayers are with the injured, their families, and all passengers who went through this distressing experience,” Tinubu wrote.
He added that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) had already begun addressing the situation and stressed that necessary preventive measures would be enforced. “I am staying updated on the latest developments and await a full briefing to ensure swift action and support for all affected. The NRC is already addressing the situation, and necessary steps are expected to be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” he noted.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, one of the busiest in the country, has witnessed both operational challenges and security threats in recent years. Tuesday’s derailment, though without fatalities, has once again raised urgent questions about maintenance, oversight, and the resilience of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure.
