Nigeria’s 20-year-old sprint star to battle Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and a star-studded field in 100m finale of Hungarian Grand Prix
Nigeria’s sprint sensation, Kanyinsola Ajayi, will face the ultimate test of his blistering form when he goes head-to-head with the world’s fastest man, Kishane Thompson of Jamaica, at the Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix on Tuesday, August 12.
The men’s 100m, the marquee finale of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, will feature one of the strongest line-ups in the event’s history. Thompson, who clocked 9.75 seconds this season the fastest time in the past decade, headlines a field where every international entrant has broken the 10-second barrier.
Ajayi will share the track with African record-holder Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya, South Africa’s Akani Simbine, Ghana’s national record-holder AbdulRasheed Saminu, and seasoned American sprinters Ronnie Baker and Chris Coleman.
The 20-year-old Nigerian has been in scintillating form in 2024, recording four sub-10-second runs in four months, including a personal best-equalling 9.92s in July at the Meeting International Sotteville-lès-Rouen in France, and a 9.96s win at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida.
Ajayi’s impressive season saw him reach the semi-finals of the men’s 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, secure his World Championships qualification for Tokyo in September, and rise to 13th in the global rankings.
For her, the Budapest showdown is more than just another race, it’s an opportunity to challenge the very top of the sprinting world and cement his status as one of the sport’s fastest-rising stars.
