President to attend major Africa-Japan summit in Yokohama before sealing economic and diplomatic ties in Brazil.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Thursday, August 14, depart Abuja on a high-profile diplomatic tour to Japan and Brazil, with a strategic stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The two-nation trip is aimed at deepening Nigeria’s economic partnerships, attracting foreign investment, and strengthening bilateral relations.
According to a statement by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s first destination will be Yokohama, Japan, where he will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) from August 20 to 22.
With the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” TICAD9 will focus on accelerating Africa’s economic transformation through private sector investment, innovation, and institutional reforms. Discussions will also emphasize building a resilient and sustainable African society anchored on human security, peace, and stability.
During his stay in Japan, President Tinubu is expected to engage in high-level bilateral meetings, network with African and international leaders, and hold talks with top executives of Japanese companies already invested in Nigeria. The aim is to expand business opportunities, foster technology transfer, and secure fresh commitments in infrastructure, manufacturing, and energy.
Initiated in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the United Nations, the African Union Commission, UNDP, and the World Bank, TICAD is a triennial summit that alternates between Japan and Africa. The last edition was held in Tunisia in August 2022. The forum serves as a platform for robust policy dialogue between African leaders and global development partners.
Following the conclusion of TICAD9, President Tinubu will proceed to Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, for a two-day state visit from Sunday, August 24, to Monday, August 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
While in Brazil, the Nigerian leader will hold a bilateral meeting with his host and participate in a Nigeria–Brazil Business Forum to explore opportunities for trade, agriculture, renewable energy, and industrial cooperation. The trip is also expected to produce new agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the two nations, as part of a broader effort to diversify Nigeria’s global partnerships.
Accompanying President Tinubu on the trip will be key ministers and senior government officials tasked with driving negotiations, strengthening diplomatic channels, and ensuring that signed deals translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.
