President Bola Tinubu departs Yokohama for Brasília after attending the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), urging Nigerians in the Diaspora to join hands in driving economic growth and national progress.
President Bola Tinubu has departed Yokohama, Japan, for Brazil, where he will commence a state visit on Saturday, August 24. His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed in a statement that the President will make a brief stopover in Los Angeles before heading to Brasília, the Brazilian capital.
The trip marks the second leg of Tinubu’s two-nation engagement which began on August 15. He left Abuja with a stopover in Dubai before arriving in Yokohama on August 18.
During his stay in Japan, the President participated in the opening ceremony and plenary of the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) on August 20, held high-level bilateral meetings, and concluded his schedule with an interactive session with Nigerians in the Diaspora on Thursday night.
At the meeting, Tinubu urged Nigerians abroad to contribute their expertise, investments, and resources towards strengthening the nation’s stability and economic growth. He stressed that the responsibility of building Nigeria must be shared between the government and citizens, both at home and abroad.
“I am happy to listen to you. I’m happy to report that many of our people are returning home,” the President said. “Yes, for economic reasons, some may decide to stay away, it is their fundamental rightbut for the growth and opportunities available in Nigeria, your contribution is very much needed. If you stay away, who will build it?”
He further emphasized unity of purpose, stating: “If we don’t join hands and work together, then we’ve lost the hope of being the leaders we are supposed to be.”
