Atiku Abubakar Adamawa chairman insists only card-carrying members will be acknowledged as ADC prepares for 2027 elections
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a stern ultimatum to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and other prominent figures in the party to regularize their membership or risk being sidelined.
Adamawa State Chairman of the ADC, Shehu Yohanna, declared that all members must obtain valid membership cards from their wards before the end of the year. He stressed that Atiku must register in Jada Local Government, while Babachir must do the same in Hong Local Government.
“You cannot be taking decisions for a party you are not constitutionally a member of. It is illegal for anyone to hold leadership positions at the national level without proper registration. All of you should register for the greatness of our party,” Yohanna said.
The ultimatum comes amid speculation that Atiku, whose much-publicised membership registration in Jada was suspended indefinitely last month, is weighing his chances of contesting for the ADC’s presidential ticket in 2027. This is seen as a strategic move in response to the rising influence of Peter Obi’s political movement within the party.
Last week, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, reaffirmed the caucus’ resolution that all coalition members must resign from their current parties and fully register with the ADC. Both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dismissed the directive as inconsequential.
Yohanna, however, dismissed both major parties as incapable of defeating the ADC in the next general elections, insisting the party is strategically positioned to wrest power. “The unfriendly policies of the present government have paved the way for our party to take over and reposition the country for authentic democracy,” he said.
Addressing speculations of crisis within the Adamawa chapter, Yohanna maintained that he remains the legitimate chairman until 2026, as stipulated by the party’s constitution. He further argued that the ADC’s governorship aspirants in Adamawa and across the nation boast some of the best credentials in the political arena.
