Gov. Usman Ododo Governor pledges proactive solutions through ACReSAL project, new drainage systems
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has assured residents that the era of devastating floods and erosion in the state is over, promising that his administration is deploying durable infrastructure to guarantee safety and sustainability for communities.
The governor gave the assurance in Lokoja through a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, where he reaffirmed his commitment to protecting lives and property against ecological disasters.
Ododo explained that his administration is no longer reacting to environmental challenges but is now proactively preventing them through solution-driven projects. He noted that the deployment of modern drainage systems across several parts of the state has already begun yielding positive results.
According to him, newly constructed drains in Etahi, Omigbo, and Olubojo communities in Ankpa Local Government Area are effectively channeling rainwater, preventing flooding, and making neighborhoods safer. “Within minutes of heavy rainfall, the water is soaked away, leaving communities safe and accessible. Our drains are working as designed, and this is just the beginning of what we intend to replicate across the state,” he said.
The governor emphasized that his administration is leveraging the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project as a strategic platform to strengthen flood control measures and reclaim land destroyed by past ecological challenges. He commended the efforts of the state ACReSAL team, led by Mr. Ladi Jatto, describing the project as a game-changer in the drive toward sustainable solutions.
Ododo stressed that his vision for the state revolves around building resilient communities through long-lasting environmental initiatives. “Kogi is no longer just reacting to ecological disasters; we are proactively deploying infrastructure that prevents them. This is a new dawn in our approach to flood control and environmental sustainability,” he affirmed.
He further assured that his government’s focus is not only on mitigating disasters but also on improving the quality of life of citizens by providing infrastructure tailored to the state’s peculiar environmental needs.
It was recall that Kogi State has in recent years been one of the worst-hit by devastating floods, with thousands displaced and farmlands destroyed. Governor Ododo’s latest initiative signals a strong determination to rewrite that history by ensuring that such ecological tragedies never cripple the state again.
