President pledges drones, advanced surveillance, and grassroots policing reforms to tackle insecurity nationwide
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Nigerian Armed Forces to conduct a sweeping review of military operations across the country following a deadly terrorist attack that claimed several lives in Darajamal, a community in Borno State.
The President’s directive includes a reassessment of security deployments, particularly the use of advanced military hardware, surveillance systems, and drones to strengthen counter-terrorism operations. The move underscores his administration’s resolve to eradicate terrorist groups and restore peace to communities repeatedly targeted by insurgents.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of the President, conveyed condolences to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the people of Borno State, and the Nigerian military, describing the attack as “a profound loss to both the state and the nation.” He reaffirmed Tinubu’s order to the Armed Forces to intensify and restructure their operational strategies to confront security threats more decisively.
“The deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served for the bereaved families,” Shettima said, while assuring citizens of the Federal Government’s determination to strengthen security forces and prevent further attacks.
In his message, the Vice President highlighted the President’s recent approval for the acquisition of additional drones, which will enhance surveillance capacity in remote and vulnerable areas. He also emphasized that Tinubu is committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s security framework evolves to meet present realities.
Beyond immediate military measures, Shettima revealed that the Federal Government is actively considering the establishment of state police. According to him, the President believes that certain security challenges require localized responses from personnel who are familiar with the terrain, culture, and dynamics of the communities they are tasked with protecting. This, he said, would complement the Armed Forces’ broader counter-terrorism efforts and provide a grassroots-level security presence.
Meanwhile, Governor Zulum personally visited Darajamal on Saturday to commiserate with families of the victims, which included both civilians and soldiers who lost their lives during the Friday night attack. The governor assured residents of the state government’s support while reiterating calls for a stronger military presence in affected communities.
The Vice President concluded his message with prayers for the bereaved families, urging them to remain resilient in the face of adversity. He reassured the people of Borno State that the Federal Government stands firmly with them and will not relent until terrorist threats are permanently neutralized.
