Group urges INEC Chairman and security agencies to ensure transparency, fairness, and peaceful conduct as South-East awaits a defining political moment
The Igbo Political Network (IPN), a socio-political organisation advocating for the protection of Igbo political and economic interests, has announced the mobilisation and deployment of over 5,000 independent observers ahead of the Anambra State Governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025.
Speaking in Enugu on Monday, the President of the group, Chief Alex Okemiri, described the forthcoming election as a historic event that holds immense significance not only for Anambra State but for the entire South-East region. He emphasised that the election represents a crucial test of political maturity and fairness among the Igbo people and called on all relevant stakeholders to ensure it is free, fair, and credible.
“All eyes are on Anambra come November 8,” Okemiri stated. “This election is not just about who becomes governor; it is about our political integrity as a people. Leaders from across Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo States are paying close attention because the outcome will reflect the political direction of Ndigbo. It is therefore imperative that the process is transparent and devoid of manipulation.”
Okemiri explained that the decision to deploy such a large number of observers stems from the group’s commitment to safeguarding democracy in the region. He noted that the observers would monitor voting processes, report irregularities, and ensure that the election outcome genuinely reflects the will of the electorate.
According to him, “Since our establishment in 2015, the Igbo Political Network has been dedicated to promoting peace, fairness, and political accountability in Igbo land. We have consistently worked to eliminate political thuggery, uphold the sanctity of the ballot, and protect voters from intimidation. The Anambra Governorship election presents another opportunity for us to demonstrate that democracy can thrive in our region when the people’s voices are truly heard.”
Addressing questions about funding and logistics, Okemiri acknowledged the financial challenges involved in deploying such a massive team of observers but maintained that the effort was a necessary sacrifice. “Yes, we are aware of the harsh economic realities, but this is a collective commitment,” he said. “Each of us at IPN has contributed from our own means because we recognise the value and importance of this election. Anambra’s political destiny is crucial to the entire South-East, and we cannot afford to be complacent.”
The IPN President further appealed to the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to ensure impartiality and fairness in the conduct of the election. He described the forthcoming poll as an early integrity test for the new INEC leadership, urging the Commission to resist any form of external pressure or bias.
“We are calling on the INEC Chairman to rise to the occasion,” Okemiri stressed. “This is his first major national task, and Nigerians are watching closely. He must ensure that every vote counts and that the will of the people prevails. The credibility of this election will not only shape the political climate in Anambra but also set the tone for the 2027 general elections. It is essential that he upholds honesty, transparency, and professionalism throughout the process.”
He warned that any attempt to manipulate the outcome could trigger widespread discontent, particularly given the current mood in the region. “Ndigbo are not happy with the state of affairs in the country,” he noted. “Any action that undermines their confidence in the democratic process could inflame tensions. That is why we urge INEC to conduct this election in a manner that restores hope and faith in governance.”
Okemiri also called on security agencies to conduct themselves ethically and professionally during the election. He emphasised that the group would be vigilant in monitoring and reporting any incidents of vote-buying, intimidation, or electoral violence.
“We expect security personnel to remain neutral and protect both voters and electoral officials,” he said. “Our observers will be on the ground to ensure transparency and fairness across all polling units. The people’s will must not be subverted, and anyone caught engaging in electoral malpractice should be made to face the full weight of the law.”
He concluded by reaffirming the group’s commitment to peace and democracy, stressing that the Anambra Governorship election offers an opportunity for the South-East to prove its political maturity and unity. “This election is a defining moment for our people,” he said. “It is time for us to demonstrate that we can determine our political future through fairness, peace, and integrity. We are fully prepared to play our part in ensuring that justice and democracy prevail.”
