Commission unveils new electoral law, engages stakeholders to chart path for transparent, free, and fair local government polls
The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has officially set the ball rolling for the 2026 Local Government Elections, with a firm commitment to uphold transparency, fairness, and inclusiveness throughout the electoral process.
This was made known on Friday in Lokoja during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting convened by the commission and presided over by its Chairman, Mr. Maman Nda Eri. The forum, which drew representatives from political parties, civil society organisations, security agencies, and the media, marked the formal commencement of activities leading to the next round of council polls in the state.
In his opening address, Mr. Eri emphasized that the stakeholders’ meeting was designed to set the tone for a credible and participatory electoral exercise. He noted that the gathering was crucial in ensuring that every participant in the electoral process had a voice in shaping the framework that would govern the polls.
“KOSIEC remains committed to transparency that will provide a level playing field for all political gladiators and their parties,” the chairman declared. “Our goal is to conduct a local government election that truly reflects the will of the people of Kogi State.”
He further disclosed that the meeting offered an opportunity for stakeholders to examine the new Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2025, which will serve as the guiding document for the forthcoming elections. Eri urged participants to familiarize themselves with the new law and help in sensitizing the public about its provisions, stressing that understanding and compliance would be key to achieving credibility in the electoral process.
The KOSIEC chairman also called on all stakeholders to begin widespread voter education campaigns across communities, encouraging citizens to actively participate in the elections. He maintained that only a well-informed and motivated electorate could ensure the realization of a truly democratic and representative outcome.
“Our meeting should majorly focus on the review of the Electoral Framework, the new 2025 KOSIEC Law, and the respective roles of stakeholders in ensuring success,” Eri added. “This exercise will not just be about elections, it is about building trust and promoting democratic culture at the grassroots.”
The interactive session allowed political parties and civil society groups to make recommendations on timelines, voter sensitization strategies, and security arrangements, as part of the roadmap toward the 2026 polls.
Meanwhile, observers have lauded KOSIEC’s early start and commitment to inclusivity, describing it as a positive step toward restoring confidence in local government elections across the state. Both government officials and political actors commended the commission’s proactive approach, noting that the process, if sustained, would enhance public trust and electoral integrity.
With preparations now underway, expectations are high that the 2026 local government elections in Kogi State will set a new benchmark for transparency and fairness.
