Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare JimohCommissioner Jimoh announces expanded deployments and ongoing operations as arrests, vehicle recoveries, and new crime trends emerge across the state
The Lagos State Police Command has intensified security presence across schools, worship centres and other public spaces as part of renewed efforts to prevent criminal activities during the ember months and into the New Year. The State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
Jimoh assured residents that Lagos remains safe, noting that additional personnel have already been deployed to sensitive areas frequently visited by the public. He emphasised that the proactive measures are aimed at strengthening public safety and maintaining peace as the year winds down.
According to him, “Lagos is secure, and we are increasing deployments to schools, religious centres and other key locations to ensure the safety of everyone using these facilities. This heightened security arrangement will continue into the New Year and beyond.”
The commissioner also revealed that tactical units across local government areas have been further reinforced to respond swiftly to emerging threats. His comments follow a series of security breaches reported in some northern states, including incidents of abductions in Kwara, Kebbi and Niger.
Highlighting recent breakthroughs, Jimoh paraded 10 high-end vehicles recovered during various operations and announced the arrest of 56 suspects linked to multiple offences. He explained that a significant number of vehicle theft cases in the state were traced to newly hired drivers and car wash attendants, who allegedly took advantage of their access to steal cars entrusted to them.
He said the recovered vehicles—among them a Toyota Hilux, Range Rover SUV, Land Cruiser, Lexus GX460, Honda CR-V, and two Toyota Corollas—were taken by individuals newly employed as drivers or by car wash workers who absconded with customers’ vehicles. A Boxer Bajaj motorcycle used during an attempted robbery was also recovered.
An assortment of weapons, including locally made pistols, a cut-to-size shotgun, a fabricated firearm, cartridges and a machete, was displayed as part of the command’s recent seizures.
While applauding the success of the ongoing operations, Jimoh urged residents to be more vigilant, especially when dealing with personal staff and service providers. He advised car owners to avoid leaving their keys with attendants and to conduct proper checks before employing drivers.
The commissioner referenced a recent case involving Olakanmi Ogundele, a Lagos property developer whose newly engaged driver, identified as Olufemi Jogbodo, allegedly disappeared with his vehicle, only four days after resuming work. Ogundele said the suspect had accompanied him on a trip to Ogun State and returned with him to Lagos before fleeing with the vehicle while he was attending a meeting.
Jimoh reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining its security operations, assuring residents that the police will continue to clamp down on criminal networks and maintain a strong security presence across the state, especially around public institutions and areas with high human traffic.
