Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested three armed suspects during a routine patrol in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State, averting what could have been a major security threat.
According to a statement by the acting Media Information Officer of OPWS, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the suspects—identified as John Isaac, 22; Baba Emmanuel, 17; and Sunday Thomas, 19, all residents of Otukpo Local Government Area, were intercepted on Wednesday, November 5, along the Otukpo–Enugu Road at the Amoda axis.
Zubairu explained that the suspects, who were riding on a motorcycle, were stopped for a search based on credible intelligence. Items recovered from them included three mobile phones and the sum of ₦20,200. Preliminary investigation revealed that the trio were en route to carry out a criminal act before they were apprehended by the troops.
The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Commending the troops for their swift and professional response, the Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Moses Gara, praised their vigilance and urged them to sustain their momentum in ongoing operations. He emphasized the importance of maintaining surveillance to ensure the safety of farmers and rural dwellers, especially during the current harvest season.
Gara reaffirmed the military’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States, assuring residents of continuous efforts to uphold peace and stability in the region.
The arrest follows closely on the heels of a violent attack in Ohimini LGA earlier in the week, where four people were reportedly killed in separate incidents. The Chairman of the local government, Adole Gabriel, confirmed that two farmers were killed on Monday and another two on Tuesday afternoon.
