Turaki, a former minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs, emerged winner at the party’s national convention held on Saturday at the Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, securing 1,516 votes in what party officials described as a decisive reaffirmation of members’ confidence in his leadership capacity. His election marks the beginning of a new chapter for the PDP at a time he described as a “crossroads” in its history.
In his acceptance speech, Turaki acknowledged the weight of responsibility placed upon the new national working committee, stressing that the mandate entrusted to the team must be carried beyond the party structure and directly to the Nigerian people. He said the new leadership understands the complexities of the task ahead and is prepared to confront the challenges with clarity, unity and renewed purpose.
Turaki revealed that the incoming executive would soon unveil a comprehensive set of guiding principles and a detailed operational framework designed to steer the party toward stability, accountability and electoral relevance. He assured members that the team intends to “hit the ground running from day one,” signaling a leadership style focused on action rather than rhetoric.
He emphasized that the PDP, despite years of political turbulence, remains the only major political party in the country that has consistently retained its original identity since it was founded. According to him, this continuity is proof of the party’s deep roots and strong connection to the Nigerian people.
Turaki reiterated that the PDP’s future must be shaped by its members, not by impunity or the dominance of a few powerful figures. He vowed that the new leadership will focus on rebuilding trust, strengthening internal democracy and ensuring that party decisions reflect the collective will of its supporters.
He added that the party’s renewed commitment to discipline and transparency would serve as the foundation for its repositioning. “We are returning the party to the people,” he said. “There will be no more impunity.”
