Shockwaves ripple through the state as Governor Ademola Adeleke cuts ties with the party that brought him into national prominence

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has officially withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to a long-running political relationship that began with his emergence as senator and later governor under the party’s banner.

The governor made the announcement late Monday via his verified X account, where he shared a copy of his resignation letter dated November 4, 2025. The letter, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2 in Sagba Abogunde, Ede North Local Government Area, confirmed that his decision had already been acknowledged at the ward level.

Adeleke attributed his departure to what he described as persistent crises rocking the PDP’s national leadership. According to him, the turmoil has made continued membership untenable.

“Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” the governor stated in the letter.

Despite the abruptness of the move, Adeleke expressed appreciation to the party for giving him the platform through which he first gained political influence. He noted his rise from the Osun West Senatorial seat he occupied between 2017 and 2019 to his historic victory in the 2022 governorship election, which saw him defeat then-incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

His resignation marks a dramatic shift in Osun’s political landscape, especially as the state edges closer to the 2026 governorship election cycle. Observers say the departure of the sitting governor from the party that helped shape his political career raises fresh questions about the future of both Adeleke and the PDP in Osun State.

Notably, Adeleke remained silent on his next political destination, fueling widespread speculation about whether he intends to align with another established party or make a more unconventional move ahead of the coming elections.

As Osun enters a period of political recalibration, the governor’s next steps are expected to significantly influence the dynamics of the state’s political contest in the months ahead.
