President Bola Ahmed Tinubu President administers oaths to key federal appointees as Executive Council pays tribute to late diplomat Joy Ogwu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday presided over the swearing-in of several newly appointed top government officials, including five Permanent Secretaries, the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), and two commissioners of the agency. The ceremony, held in the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja, took place moments before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) convened its weekly meeting.
In the first round of the oath-taking, the President inaugurated the five Permanent Secretaries selected from different geopolitical zones of the country. They include Alhaji Abdulkarim Ozi Ibrahim representing the North Central; Dr. John Chidiebere Ezeamama; Dr. Abdul Sule Usman Garba from the North West; Dr. Ishiyaku Musa Mohammed representing the North East; and Dr. Ukaire Binyerem Chigbowu from Abia State, representing the South East. Their elevation marks a fresh boost to administrative leadership across various federal ministries.
The second phase of the ceremony saw the President swear in the new Chairman of the National Population Commission, Aminu Yusuf, along with two newly appointed commissioners. Among them was Dr. Betara Tonga from Yobe State, who now joins the Commission’s leadership structure at a critical time for national demographic planning.
Following the swearing-in, the Federal Executive Council paused to honour the memory of Ambassador Joy Uche Ogwu, a distinguished diplomat and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who recently passed away at 79. Ogwu, remembered for her impactful service and her tenure as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, received a minute of silence from the Council in recognition of her contributions to the country’s foreign policy landscape.
Once tributes were concluded, the FEC entered full session with key government figures in attendance. Present were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; ministers; and senior presidential advisers, collectively setting the stage for deliberations on national governance priorities.
The day’s proceedings reflected the administration’s focus on strengthening institutional leadership while acknowledging the legacies of those who have shaped Nigeria’s diplomatic and administrative history.
