‎Protesters storm State Assembly, accuse Cornelius Ojelabi of electoral mismanagement and selfish leadership in Lagos APC crisis

‎Dozens of aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State staged a peaceful protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, July 28, 2025, demanding the removal of the party’s state chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi.

‎The protesters, said to be representatives from all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), accused Ojelabi of plotting to impose loyalists as appointees across the councils, thereby undermining internal democracy within the party.

‎Chanting slogans and wielding placards with inscriptions such as “Ojelabi Must Go” and “We Want Fresh Leadership,” the protesters expressed frustration over what they called years of neglect, highhandedness, and betrayal of the party’s progressive ideals.

‎The protest, which began early in the day, attracted significant attention and prompted a strong security presence at the Assembly complex. Police officers were deployed to maintain order and prevent any possible disruption.

‎In a bid to calm tensions, Lagos State Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat made a brief appearance at the protest venue, assuring the demonstrators that the matter would be addressed internally and resolved amicably.

‎The leader of the protesting group, Segun Faleye, submitted a formal letter on behalf of the coalition to the Assembly. Speaking to the press, he accused Chairman Ojelabi of presiding over what he described as “the worst primary election in Lagos State’s history” during the 2025 local government polls, citing bias and manipulation.

‎Faleye also blamed Ojelabi’s leadership for the party’s shocking loss of Lagos to the opposition in the 2023 presidential election, stating that it was the first such loss since the start of the Fourth Republic. He described the chairman’s tenure as riddled with selfishness and political miscalculations that have eroded public trust and unity within the APC in Lagos. “We are tired of his selfish leadership and the plot of his team to derail from the progressive ideals championed by President Bola Tinubu,” Faleye declared.

‎The internal crisis adds to growing tensions within the Lagos APC, with calls mounting for urgent reforms and a change in leadership to restore faith among grassroots party members.
