President Commends Local Heroes, Urges Waterway Safety, and Deploys National Agencies for Urgent Relief Operations
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered immediate and coordinated emergency response efforts following the tragic flood disaster in Yola, Adamawa State, and a fatal boat mishap in Guni village, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed deep sorrow over the lives lost and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and affected communities.
To reinforce rescue and relief efforts, President Tinubu directed the National Emergency Response Centre and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to collaborate closely with the governments of Adamawa and Niger States. He emphasized the need for swift, comprehensive assistance to mitigate the impact of the disasters.
The President also praised the bravery and resilience of the Adamawa and Niger State Emergency Management Agencies, local divers, volunteers, and community leaders who have been at the forefront of rescue and recovery operations.
Highlighting that flooding is a global crisis intensified by climate change, Tinubu called on Nigerians to avoid practices that exacerbate the problem. He expressed concern that despite continued public enlightenment by the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), such tragic incidents persist.
He urged opinion leaders, stakeholders, and relevant authorities to step up advocacy on waterway safety. He also appealed to citizens and business operators who depend on inland waterways for transport and commerce to strictly comply with safety regulations issued by competent authorities.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening disaster response systems and safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of all Nigerians.
