Residents in Ibadan’s eastern axis and surrounding LGAs are urged to take immediate precautions as flood-prone zones face an imminent threat.
Ibadan, Nigeria, the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has sounded a strong warning to residents of flood-prone areas, urging them to brace for heavy rainfall and potential flooding across parts of the state.
According to Mrs. Ojuolape Busari, the Administrative Secretary of SEMA, recent data from the Oyo State Flood Early Warning System reveals that the eastern and northeastern regions of Ibadan will be most affected. Specific hotspots include communities in Lagelu Local Government Area, such as Iyana Offa, eastern Moniya, and areas extending toward Osun State. Egbeda LGA, particularly the eastern fringes near Lagelu, is also on high alert.
She noted that moderate to heavy rainfall is also expected in central and eastern parts of Ibadan Metropolis, putting densely populated zones like IITA, Ibadan Airport, University of Ibadan, Ojoo, Akobo, Basorun, Gate, Challenge, and Ring Road at risk. Parts of Akinyele and Oluyole LGAs have also been flagged for possible flooding.
“In simpler terms, if you are in or travelling through the eastern and northeastern parts of Ibadan today—especially along major roads heading east and north—you should expect heavy rainfall with possible flooding,” Busari stated.
SEMA emphasized that it is working in collaboration with other government agencies, civil society groups, and voluntary organizations to provide a swift emergency response and support to affected communities.
Residents are strongly advised to take precautionary measures immediately, including clearing drainage systems, avoiding waterlogged roads, and relocating from vulnerable areas where necessary. Busari stressed the importance of early action,
