Michelle Alozie nets 94th-minute winner as Nigeria edges South Africa 2-1 in pulsating semi-final clash
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked their place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over arch-rivals South Africa in Tuesday’s semi-final thriller.
With the clock ticking down and extra time looming, Michelle Alozie emerged as the match-winner, striking in the 94th minute after a brilliant assist from Esther Okoronkwo to seal Nigeria’s passage to the final.
The match, held under high tension and intensity, saw the Falcons dominate key moments while fending off a determined challenge from South Africa’s Banyana Banyana. Nigeria took the lead just before halftime when Rasheedat Ajibade calmly converted a penalty in the 45th minute following sustained pressure.
South Africa, however, responded with equal intensity in the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Linda Motlhalo fired home from the spot to bring the score level at 1-1.
Earlier in the first half, South Africa was dealt a blow when striker Hildah Magaia was forced off due to injury in the 26th minute, prompting the introduction of Thubelihle Makhubela. Despite the setback, Banyana Banyana rallied and looked dangerous for large spells in the second half.
Both teams made several substitutions to manage fatigue and add intensity, but it was the Super Falcons who held their nerve and composure in the final moments. Their experience and resilience shone through as they snatched victory at the death.
The win not only sends Nigeria to yet another WAFCON final but also reinforces their reputation as the queens of African women’s football. With the title now within reach, the Super Falcons will look to extend their dominance and capture yet another continental crown.
