‎Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has broken his silence amid widespread speculation suggesting he is set to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 race.

‎In a statement released on Tuesday by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Obi categorically denied making any declaration about switching parties or aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as falsely claimed in a circulating statement attributed to him.
‎“The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has been made aware of a purported statement from our principal, Peter Obi, denying joining the Peoples Democratic Party and reaffirming his commitment to the African Democratic Congress,” the statement read. “This is fake and did not originate from him.”

‎The former Anambra State governor stated that he remains firmly committed to his vision for a "New Nigeria" and warned against the fabrication of statements to mislead the public.
‎“Peter Obi has been unequivocal in his position in the ongoing coalition and doesn’t need anyone to put words into his mouth,” the media office asserted. “He would not accept anybody attributing a statement to him just to satisfy their devious agenda.”

‎Obi’s team also advised the public and media to disregard any statements not directly issued through his verified channels, adding, “Only statements from his official handle or this media office should be considered authentic.”

‎The clarification comes in response to claims made by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Borno State governor, who alleged during a recent appearance on Channels Television that Obi was preparing to rejoin the PDP to contest in 2027.

‎Sheriff had stated, “As far as this politics is concerned, they (ADC) don’t exist. The information available to me is that any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP.”

‎Peter Obi’s media team has dismissed these assertions as baseless, reaffirming his focus on building a credible alternative for Nigeria’s future.
