Ex-Gov Yahaya Bello, & Gov OdodoFormer governors, lawmakers, and stakeholders rally as the ruling party consolidates dominance in the state
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State is tightening its hold on the political landscape as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections. Former Governor Yahaya Bello, working in close collaboration with his successor, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, has been at the forefront of efforts to fortify the party and rally stakeholders across divides for a formidable outing.
Special Adviser to Governor Ododo on Public Relations, Barr. Muhammed Isah Onogwu, described the APC as the only “living” political party in Kogi, noting that the ruling party continues to gain strength daily with new entrants from opposition camps. According to him, “With the collapse of the PDP in the state, APC is busy receiving members from rival parties into its fold. This growing support base is what gives the APC its edge as we move closer to 2027.”
As part of ongoing consultations, Governor Ododo and Bello paid a courtesy visit to former Governor Captain Idris Wada at his Abuja residence on Sunday. The meeting, which Onogwu described as cordial, focused on fostering unity, peace, and collective progress in Kogi State. Wada, respected for his leadership and contributions to the state, warmly welcomed his successors, stressing the importance of cooperation beyond political lines.
The APC leaders also visited Hon. Joseph Leke Abejide, who currently represents Yagba Federal Constituency under the African Democratic Party (ADC). Discussions with the federal lawmaker reportedly centred on building a united political front that will consolidate Kogi’s strength and attract greater development opportunities for the people.
Onogwu highlighted that the APC’s dominance in Kogi is already evident. The party currently boasts the governor, two of the state’s three senators, seven of nine House of Representatives members, 24 out of 25 State Assembly members, 21 local government chairmen, and 239 councillors. He further pointed out that Sunday’s Assembly by-election victory reaffirmed the APC’s unmatched political structure in the state.
“As political alignments and realignments continue to unfold ahead of 2027, what is happening in Kogi demonstrates that the APC is not only united but also expanding its base,” Onogwu stated. “This is why the party is confidently positioned for a formidable outing when Nigerians go to the polls.”
With stakeholders closing ranks, defections swelling its ranks, and its grassroots machinery intact, the APC looks set to tighten its control in Kogi, leaving little doubt that the state may remain a stronghold of the ruling party in the years to come.
