Primate Ndubuka Criticizes Church in Wales for abandoning biblical doctrine, urges global Anglicans to stand firm against liberal trends
The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has strongly denounced the recent election of Rt. Rev. Cherry Vann as the Archbishop of Wales, calling it a "further departure from the truth of Scripture" and a blow to Anglican orthodoxy.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, said the church will not recognize Vann’s elevation, describing it as a clear sign that sections of the global Anglican Communion have embraced a postmodern agenda that undermines biblical authority.
Vann, who is in a civil partnership with Wendy Diamond, was elected on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, after securing a two-thirds majority vote from the Electoral College at a meeting held at St Pierre Church and Hotel in Chepstow. She will succeed Bishop Andrew John, who retired in July after serving three and a half years as the Archbishop of Wales.
The Church of Nigeria expressed deep concern over what it sees as a growing theological compromise, referencing Vann's known stance as a practising homosexual. Primate Ndukuba warned that the development impairs the church's moral authority to carry out effective missions, evangelism, and leadership.
He said, “This recent election of Bishop Vann is a clear revelation that many who claim to be members of the body of Christ cannot endure sound doctrine, but according to their desires, they will heap up for themselves teachers... and turn their ears away from the truth.”
Drawing parallels to the tenure of Most Rev. Katherine Jefferts Schori, former Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the U.S., Ndukuba recalled what he described as "the persecution of faithful Anglicans" during her leadership, warning that history may repeat itself under Vann’s leadership.
Calling on faithful Anglicans worldwide, the Nigerian Primate urged churches to reject liberal movements within the Communion and realign with biblically faithful networks such as GAFCON. He emphasized that the Church in Wales, and others following a similar path, risk spiritual irrelevance and divine judgment unless they repent.
“As a matter of urgency, the Church of Nigeria believes this moment calls for prayer for the Church of Wales,” the statement added. “We hope the Church of England does not follow in her steps. True hope lies in repentance and godliness.”
The Primate concluded by encouraging Anglicans globally to "denounce, reject, condemn, and expel" theological compromise and to stand firm with faithful remnants across troubled dioceses worldwide.
