Public urged to take safety precautions as heavy rain, flooding expected across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday through Wednesday, warning of a high risk of flash floods in several states.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet highlighted that the northern, central, and southern regions would all experience varying intensities of rainfall, with some areas particularly vulnerable to flooding.
According to the forecast, there is a high likelihood of floods in Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Oyo, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States over the three-day period. Residents in these locations are strongly advised to activate emergency response plans and avoid driving during heavy downpours.
For Monday, morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States in the north. These conditions are anticipated to intensify later in the day, covering the entire northern region. The central region will see light morning rain in areas such as Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa, while light afternoon and evening rains are expected across Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Benue, and the FCT. In the south, cloudy skies will dominate with light rain likely in Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States. These rains will continue into the later part of the day across most of the region.
Tuesday will bring morning thunderstorms and moderate rains to parts of Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Zamfara in the north, with further widespread thunderstorms expected across the northern belt later in the day. Intermittent light rains are forecast for parts of the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Benue States in the central region. In the south, light rain will persist throughout the day across most states including Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Flash floods are anticipated particularly in Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
On Wednesday, moderate morning thunderstorms are forecast for Taraba and Kaduna, with isolated thunderstorms and rain extending to Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Adamawa, and other northern states later in the day.
