Armed attackers raid a police station and a market in Babanla, prompting a joint security response and a manhunt
Tragedy struck the Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on August 8 when heavily armed gunmen launched a coordinated attack, killing five people, including a police inspector.
The Kwara State Police Command identified the slain officer as Inspector Adejumo Wasiu. According to Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the attackers, riding on motorcycles, stormed the town in large numbers, firing sporadically as they targeted the Divisional Police Headquarters and raided the community market.
A swift counter-response by a joint team of police operatives, Nigerian Army personnel, vigilantes, and local hunters repelled the assault, restoring order and forcing the assailants to flee. A full-scale manhunt has since been launched to track down those responsible.
On Sunday, Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo, accompanied by the Kwara State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), visited Babanla for an on-the-spot security assessment. They held high-level discussions with the traditional ruler, Oba Yusuf Arojojoye II, focusing on peace consolidation and strengthening community-security collaboration.
The joint delegation also toured key locations, including the market and police headquarters, to assess the level of damage and ensure stability. Commissioner Ojo ordered sustained armed patrols, intensified intelligence gathering, and deployment of specialised tracking teams, while the DSS pledged ongoing intelligence support.
The police command urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative by providing credible information to security agencies, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the state.
